In the age of online shopping, are bricks and mortar shops becoming a rare breed? Luckily not in my woolly experience! Just yesterday I had someone rush into the shop in desperate need of some darning needles, as the ones she ordered online did not arrive in time to get that baby hat finished up. Never fear, GTS to the rescue! The presence of the LYS (local yarn shop) is super important, and Knit Now’s ‘Stitched Together’ campaign is working away diligently to promote just that.
Most knitters and fibre enthusiasts are willing to put in a bit of work and travel to get to a wool shop. Ginger Twist Studio is not smack-dab in the middle of Edinburgh, and yet it has become a destination for wool and fibre enthusiasts from Edinburgh and abroad. Local yarn shops are necessary for their squish factor alone! Not only can you touch/feel/ squish the yarn, but it is very useful to view the colours in the the woolly flesh. Speaking from experience, everyone’s monitors show shades slightly different. I love my neighbourhood as well. There are some lovely cafes and a super bakery just round the corner, which definitely add to the destination factor of my shop. What is knitting without tea and cake?!
The Wool of the Month and Designer of the Month feature insure there is always something new to see/touch/try on in my shop. I knit like a mad woman to create a steady stream of new samples being put out on display…or I just wear them. Ginger Twist Studio is a treasure trove where you can access wool, patterns and tools all under one roof. You can seek advice on certain techniques, gain input on the best yarn choice for a pattern, or attend a workshop. To help further develop and foster this community, I enjoy organising events through the shop; The Indie Burgh Yarn Crawl and The Tea Hat Party being a couple examples. There is a steady schedule of workshops where you can pick up some new skills, as well as a weekly knit night at the pub. Knitting and crochet do not have to be solitary activities by any means!
Go on and pick up a copy of the latest Knit Now, which has hit the stands today. You can check out all the shops involved in the Stitched Together campaign, and even use your Stitched Together card for 10% off in participating shops (GTS included!). We wouldn’t be here without your support, so thank you!
